Huntington Beach – California

A car crashed into the garage caused significant damage to multiple structural components, including the garage door frame, the post supporting it, the wall on the opposite side, and the garage’s foundation. This level of damage prompted a thorough inspection to assess the extent of the impact on the garage’s structural integrity.

After the inspection, engineers performed structural calculations to evaluate the load-bearing capacity and stability of the damaged areas. They determined that the gravity and lateral members of the garage needed to be replaced and strengthened. Gravity members support vertical loads, while lateral members resist horizontal forces, such as wind or seismic activity.

The damage to these elements meant that the garage could not safely support the building’s weight/withstand external forces. The engineers developed a new structural design, incorporating calculations to ensure that the repairs would restore the garage’s ability to safely support both gravity and lateral loads based on new building codes.
